it is referred with different names all over south india but the taste and preparation remains fairly consistent. it is known as appam, appe, paddu etc.

appam is always been the most popular and favorite snack for breakfast. appe is not only makes a perfect breakfast but is healthy to eat too. very less oil is used to prepare these appams and one can make too quickly. these tempting appams can be a good option as a light snack. you can pack them in tiffin for kids along with tomato ketchup.

ingredients for rava appam :

  • semolina (sooji) - 1 cup (100 grams)
  • curd - ½ cup (whisked)
  • oil - 2 tbsp
  • cauliflower - ¼ cup (grated)
  • onion - ¼ cup (finely chopped)
  • green chilly - 1 (finely chopped)
  • capsicum - 2 tbsp (finely chopped)
  • ginger paste - 1 tsp
  • salt - ½ tsp or to taste
  • Small mustard seeds (rai) - ¼ tsp
  • baking soda - ¼ tsp
  • water - as per required


directions for rava appam :

  • take semolina in a big mixing bowl and now add whisked curd to it and mix really well.
  • to the batter add finely chopped cauliflower, finely chopped green chilies, onion, capsicum ginger paste and salt. mix everything really well. if the batter appears too thick then add some water to it.

  • Batter should be of medium consistency just like idli batter.
  • cover and keep the batter aside for 10 to 15 to rest. use it later to make appams.
  • After 15 minutes, batter is now ready.
  • now in the end, add baking soda to the batter and mix gently. don’t over whisk the batter.
  • preheat an appam maker and pour little oil in its each mold.

  • now sprinkles some mustard seed in each molds.
  • when the seeds splutter, fill each mold with the batter and cover them.
  • let them simmer for 3 minutes on low-medium flame.
  • when the appe get golden brown from beneath, flip the side and continue cooking until golden brown from this side as well.

  • it can take 2 minutes. cook the appams until they get golden brown on both the sides.
  • take out the roasted appams in a plate and similarly prepare the rest as well.

  • you can serve these appams with any indian chutney or dip like green coriander chutney or tomato ketchup or coconut chutney.
