(Sabudana Khichdi Recipe in Hindi)

Sago (Sabudana, Tapioca ) Khichadi is usually made in fasts and one of the popular items that can be eaten during fastings.  It is usually made during fasting days like Navratri, Mahashivratri, Ekadashi or Chaitra Navratri. Sago or Sabudana is available in the market in two qualities. One is big grains and the other is small grains.  Soaking time differs due to different sizes.

Sabudana Khichdi is one of the easiest dish to make when you're fasting.
If you are specifically making it for fasts, then you should use sendha salt also known as Rock Salt instead of the Normal Table salt. Today we will prepare Sago Khichadi, that you and your family members can enjoy eating during your fasting days.

Ingredients for Sabudana Khichdi Recipe

  • Sabudana (Tapioca pearls or Sago) - 1 Cup
  • Peanuts - ¼ Cups
  • Boiled Potato - 1 (Medium Size)
  • Grated Ginger - 1 Tsp (Optional)
  • Green chilli (Hari mirch) - 1 (Finely Chopped)
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 Tsp
  • Cumin Seeds (Jeera) - 1 Tsp
  • Black pepper - 1/4 Tsp
  • Lemon juice - 1 Tsp
  • Coriander Leaves (Dhania) - 1 Tbsp (Finely Chopped)
  • Ghee - 1 Tbsp
  • Sendha Namak (Rock Salt) - 1 Tsp (As per taste)

Directions for Sabudana Khichdi Recipe

  • Wash the sabudana and soak them for an 3-4 hours in water in a container. Water level should be just 1 cm above the sabudana in the container.
  • Keep stirring the sabudana in the container every hour to maintain uniformity.
  • After 3-4 hour check them with hand, if still hard keep them soaked for few hours more.
  • Once they are soft, strain the excess water and keep aside.
  • Please Note : Sabudana comes in different sizes and soaking time may differ.

Sabudana Khichdi for Navratri fasting Vrat

  • Roast peanuts on a hot pan/wok, peel off the skin and then grind them.
  • Peel the boiled potato and cut into small cubes.
  • Mix the powdered peanuts and rock salt (Sendha Namak) with the drained sabudana.
  • Heat the ghee in a pan/wok, add cumin seeds. Let them splutter for one minute.
  • Now add chopped green chillies and grated ginger. Cook them for 1-2 minutes or till the raw smell of the ginger goes away.
  • Now add potato cubes. Stir and cook well till it becomes golden brown in colour.
  • After that add the red chilli powder and black pepper powder.
  • Now add sabudana and saute for 4-5 minutes. Mix well.
  • Then add lime juice and mix well.
  • Cook for another 4-5 minutes on low flame.
  • After that switch off the flame and sprinkle some chopped coriander leaves. Mix well.
