it is referred with different names all over south india but the taste and preparation remains fairly consistent. it is known as appam, appe, paddu etc.
appe is not only makes a perfect breakfast but is healthy to eat too. very less oil is used to prepare these appams and one can make the too quickly. these tempting appams can be a good option as a light snack.
veg rice dal batter appams are so devouring that the kids too relish eating them. you can serve these with any indian chutney or dip like green coriander chutney or tomato ketchup or coconut chutney. pack them in tiffin for kids along with tomato ketchup.

ingredients for Veg appam recipe
- rice dal batter - 3 cup (click here for rice dal batter recipe)
- oil - 3-4 tbsp
- small mustard seeds (rai) - 1 tsp
- cauliflower - ¼ cup (grated)
- onion - 1 (finely chopped)
- green chilly - 1 (finely chopped - optional)
- ginger paste - 1 tsp
- capsicum - 1 tbsp (finely chopped)
- salt - as per taste
- water - as per required
Step by Step Recipe
How to make rice dal batter veg appam :
- take rice dal batter in a bowl.(click here for rice dal batter recipe)
- add grated cauliflower, finely chopped cauliflower, onion, green chilies, capsicum, ginger paste and salt into the batter. mix everything really well. if the batter appears too thick then add some water to it.
- cover and keep the batter aside for 10 to rest. use it later to make appams.
- after that batter is now ready. now heat 1 tsp oil in a small wok or pan and add mustard seeds to it. when the seeds splutter then switch off the flame.
- pour this tempering to the batter and mix well.
- preheat an appam maker and pour little oil in its each mold.
- fill each mold with the batter and covered it.
- let them simmer for 3 minutes on low-medium flame.
- when the appe get golden brown from beneath, flip the side and continue cooking until golden brown from this side as well.
- it can take 2 minutes. cook the appams until they get golden brown on both the sides.
- take out the roasted appams in a plate and similarly prepare the rest as well.
- now you hot and delicious veg appam is ready to be served. served veg rice dal appam with chutney sambar.
